Background/Introduction
While patient safety is quite rightly a key concern for all diagnostic and interventional radiologists (IRs),
occupational radiation protection awareness is often a lower priority.
All too frequently,
this important topic is given scant attention by educators,
management and practitioners themselves.
In order to respond to this growing need for radiation protection education,
in 2013 CIRSE’s Radiation Protection Subcommittee launched an awareness campaign,
with a special focus on radiation-induced cataracts.
With the support of industry partners,
the campaign was expanded into a large-scale interactive campaign – the Radiation Protection Pavilion – the following year.
The 2015 Annual Meeting saw a second extended Radiation Protection Pavilion,
with a number of new features that helped congress delegates bring their radiation safety knowledge up to speed.

This campaign described below is offered as a case study of how radiation protection content can be effectively communicated in the medical congress environment.
The Radiation Protection Pavilion directly addressed three EuroSafe Call for Action points: promoting up-to-date equipment and providing guidance on how to reduce doses while maintaining image quality (Action 4),
establishing a dialogue with industry regarding the improvement of radiological equipment (Action 5) and improving communication with health professionals (Action 10).
