Conclusion and Recommendations
Observed visitor flow and delegate interest in the project by far exceeded expectations,
reflecting a real demand for information on radiation safety and dose management at IR and radiology congresses,
which,
at most meetings,
still tends to be underestimated.
The distinctive feature of this campaign and a possible reason for its success was the radiation safety experience,
which was hosted in a dedicated area of the exhibition and covered a broad spectrum of information needs (live talks,
display material,
vendors),
activities (simulators,
quiz,
prize draw) and services (eye-checks).
The Subcommittee observed a demand for more scientific proof of not only the health risks of occupational radiation exposure,
but also the efficiency of radiation protection material,
which may influence radiology departments when it comes to purchasing new protective material.
Secondly,
the entry into force of the European Basic Safety Standards Directive [2] and its transposition by 2018 will soon make new occupational dose limits and reporting obligations a reality for (interventional) radiologists,
and will thus have to be addressed more comprehensively by medical societies.
The Radiation Protection Pavilion 2015 succeeded in providing a unique platform for information exchange and dialogue about the crucial issue of radiation safety.
The very positive feedback from both physicians and industry representatives confirmed that the ultimate objective of raising awareness of occupational radiation hazards could be achieved,
but that efforts and international cooperation need to be kept up.
