Background/introduction
A self-developed automatic dose monitoring system was implemented at the Department of Radiology since 2014 to record dose relevant parameters from two different mammographic systems (FFDM,
full-field digital mammography).
In January 2017 both FFDM systems were upgraded to digital breast tomosynthesis systems (DBT).
In this study we evaluated the average glandular dose change before and after installing DBT.
Description of activity and work performed
We retrospectively analyzed the DICOM header tags from 18520 mammographic examinations acquired by digital mammography (DM; Craniocaudal CC and mediolateral oblique MLO) of both breasts and 13750 mammographic examination by DM plus DBT respectively.
Two mammographic systems were used: Siemens Mammomat Inspiration and Inspiration Prime with Tomosynthesis respectively and GE Senograph Essential with and without Tomosynthesis upgrade.
The average glandular dose,
entrance dose and patient age were analyzed and statistical location parameters calculated.
We then compared these statistical parameters of the total glandular dose from...
Conclusion and recommendations
Results:
Average patient age was 61.0 (48.9 – 73.1 years).
The median glandular dose in the period 2014-2016 for 2 views and both sides and both scanner were 5,2mGy,
5.6mGy for Siemens scanner alone and 4.4 for GE.
The median glandular dose in the period 2017-2018 for 2 views,
both sides and both scanner were 3,67mGy (2.81 – 4.62),
3.57Gy (2.77 – 4.46) for Siemens scanner alone and 4.95mGy (4.08-6.09) for GE repectively (Table 1).
Conclusions:
A significant glandular dose reduction of -36.3% can be...
