The European Alliance for Medical Radiation Protection Research (EURAMED) was established by five medical associations involved in the application of ionising radiation in medicine, namely the EANM (European Association of Nuclear Medicine), the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP), the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS), the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO), with the goal to jointly improve medical care and to promote medical radiation protection through sustainable research efforts. EURAMED collaborates with relevant...
Description of activity and work performed
In April 2017, the five founding societies of EURAMED published a first strategic research agenda (SRA) for medical radiation protection, identifying five areas of radiation protection research as the most relevant and urgent for effective medical care: Measurement and quantification in the field of medical applications of ionising radiation; normal tissue reactions, radiation-induced morbidity and long-term health problems; optimisation of radiation exposure and harmonisation of practices; justification of the use of ionising radiation in medical practice; infrastructures for quality assurance.

Conclusion and recommendations
EURAMED aims to further develop and expand its existing Strategic Research Agenda by considering the European integration process for radiation protection research and including and consulting a wide range of stakeholders and to develop a corresponding roadmap for the medical field, providing guidance on priority topics and related funding needs to stakeholders and policy makers. EURAMED also aims to expand its membership (full, associate, individual members) to strengthen the activities of its committees and working groups.
