Methods or background
Acknowledging the importance of medical applications as the largest man-made source of exposure with ionizing radiation and the great possibilities of applying ionizing radiation in medicine, the EURATOM programme has launched a call for a coordination and support action to develop a strategic research agenda (SRA) on medical applications of ionizing radiation in general allowing to improve links to other programs like HEALTH or DIGITALIZATION. A strategic research agenda in this context is a document based on consensus of a large group of stakeholders which research topics should be dealt with in the future describing the highest potential for improving patient benefits and possibilities for the european industry, but also for ground breaking new developments allowing better health care for various diseases.
A consortium called EURAMED rocc-n-roll will develop such an SRA partially based on the existing EURAMED SRA on medical radiation protection. It will also develop a roadmap describing how this research agenda can be implemented. An interlink document showing the potential distributions of the different European research programmes will also be developed. All these documents need to be derived based on a broad consensus of all stakeholders especially including the patients’ perspective. EURAMED rocc-n-roll is coordinated by EIBIR as the administrative coordinator, Guy Frija as the clinical coordinator and Christoph Hoeschen as the scientific coordinator. The project is based on workshops allowing input in person or through consortium members and writing panels.
To achieve this, research and radiation protection needs in the clinical disciplines using ionising radiation will be analysed with the aim to generate the largest benefit for the European population in an equal, safe, high-quality way throughout Europe, by fostering clinical translation, while also strengthening economic growth and industrial competitiveness, supported by research and innovation in the field.
The success of EURAMED rocc-n-roll and the strategic research agenda that will be developed in this project strongly depend on the contribution of European researchers in all related fields as well as all kinds of stakeholders with an especially strong input from the patient groups. Thus, EURAMED rocc-n-roll is hoping for input from interested groups during the whole timeframe of the project.
