Purpose
Intravascular ultrasonography (IVUS) is currently used in clinical practice to provide real-time images of arterial morphology. Application of the technique for the assessment of the arterial elasticity is not so advanced. The aim of our study was to evaluate the usefulness of IVUS for determining the mechanical properties of vessel walls .
Methods and Materials
Meterials: - Human real arteries, collected from cadavers - IVUS system (Endosonics, USA) equipped with 20 MHz solid state64 elements catheter - Control unit to adjust and measure pressure - Tank filled with physiological salineMethods: The arteries were immediately after dissection, mounted in specially designed tips and immersed in physiological saline at room temperature. A computer-controlled device was used to change the pressure inside the vessel in the range 0 - 200 mmHg. Changes of wall dimension were acquired by an IVUS clinical system and...
Results
External and internal area(P) currves were fitted for both inflating and deflating with correlation r > 0.92.For all casses we calculated folowing relations:Compliance - pressure Stress - strain Einc - strain Einc - pressure
Conclusion
Following concussions may be drawn:IVUS technique supplemented by the image processing and pressure measurements can be applied to determine mechanical properties of the vessel wall in vitro. The non-linear shapes of the stress-strain curves are in good agreement with the previously reported data. All parameters ( Einc, compliance, strain-stress) commonly used for the description of the arterial wall elasticity can be measured. The advanced interpretation, needs, however, further studies. The investigations based on finite element models are in progress in our laboratory. The results confirm that IVUS...
