Methods and Materials
Meterials: -
Human real arteries, collected from cadavers -
IVUS system (Endosonics, USA) equipped with 20 MHz solid state 64 elements catheter -
Control unit to adjust and measure pressure -
Tank filled with physiological saline Methods: The arteries were immediately after dissection, mounted in
specially designed tips and immersed in physiological saline at room temperature. A computer-controlled device was used to
change the pressure inside the vessel in the range 0 - 200 mmHg. Changes of wall dimension were acquired by an IVUS clinical system and synchronized with pressure measurement. Next the arteries were subjected to
histological staining. To determine arterial geometry the IVUS images were processed off-line using the Visual C++
program developed in our laboratories. The program allows
automatic determination of the internal (Rint) and external (Rext) wall radii as a function of pressure P. The measured Rint(P) and Rext(P) functions were
fitted with the Langewouters arctangent model: A=a(0,5+1/PI*atan(P/c-b/c)) ; Where A= PI * R2 - artery area; a,b,c - tree parameters; The following measures of the artery elasticity were determined:- Artery compliance C as a derivate of A: C=[a/(PI*c)]/(1+(P/c-b/c)2) ; - Circumferential wall stress : =P*( Rext(P)+Rint(P))/(2*Rext(P)-Rint(P)) ; - Circumferential strain : = (Rext(P) +Rint(P))/(Rext(P0) +Rint(P0)); - Incremental elastic modulus Einc: Einc=0,75*/ ;
