Learning objectives
To illustrate imaging features of various developmental, inflammatory, neoplastic, traumatic and postsurgical process that located in or adjacent to duodenum. In this presentation many duodenal pathologies such as Congenital abnormalities; duodenal malrotation, duodenal atresia, duodenal web, diverticulum, annular pancreas, paraduodenal hernia, lymphangiectasia, superior mesenteric artery syndrome, Inflammatory mural thickening due to; acute pancreatitis, acute cholecystitis, perforated duodenal ulcer, Crohn's disease, Coeliac disease, Menetrier's disease, Mural thickening arised from adjacent infectious process such as; Subheptic abscesses, mesenteric panniculitis, perfrorated large bowel, perfrorated gallbladder, pyelonephritic psoas abscess,...
Background
Cross-sectional imaging modalities especially spiral computed tomography (CT) has improved the evaluation of the diseases affecting duodenal sweep when compared with barium studies and ultrasonography (US). In spite of this, all radiologic imaging modalities may have a contributary role in interpretation of duodenal diseases. Nevertheless, duodenum is frequently an overlooked segment of gastrointestinal tract for radiologist in most imaging pocedures (1). Although primary diseases of doudenum are rare, several secondary processes may involve duodenum due to it’s both intra and extraperitoneal localization, proximity to pancreas,...
Imaging findings OR Procedure details
Anatomy Duodenum means “two plus ten” and it is a retroperitoneal structure except the bulb portion. Duodenum has no mesentery. It is divided in to four sections: 1. Bulb; extends from pylor to the neck of gallbladder, 2. Descending portion: from neck of the gallbladder to genu, 3. Horizontal portion:from genu to abdominal aorta, 4. Ascending portion; extends from aorta to ligament of Treitz CONGENITAL ABNORMALITIES Malrotation If there is abnormal rotation during the 6th week of embriological period, the duodenum does not acccross the...
Conclusions
Although primary duodenal pathologies are rare, many different pathologies may affect or may arise from duodenum, therefore, radiologist should pay attention to duodenum as much as other adjacent organs in the interpretation of radiological imaging modalities.
