Learning objectives
The objectives of this review are as follows:To assess the spectrum of MDCT findings with the patientswho are suspected of different pathologies whom were diagnosed based on MDCT purulent processes in abdominal cavity. To evaluate the usefulness of MDCT in the diagnosis of abdominal inflammatory diseases. To differentiate them from the other abdominal pathologies.
Background
The symptoms ofthe purulentprocesses such as malaise, fever, chills, abdominal pain are non-characteristic and could be signs of many different pathologies.Laboratory abnormalities are also non-specific. Because of these reasons establishing proper diagnosis could be delayed. Performing MDCT in many cases enables final diagnosis and decisions about proper treatment.
Imaging findings OR Procedure details
We performed MDCT after giving water solution of contrast medium per os and before and after i.v. contrast medium.
We examined the patient with suspicion of for example stomach tumor, inflammation of the biliary ducts, dysfunction stent of the bile duct (two patients) and inflammatory bowel disease.
All the patients suffered from purulent processes (hepatic abscess, gangrenous cholecystitis, abscess between small bowel loops, gall bladder empyema).
Case 1.
• 29 year old patient with recurrent fever and abdominal pain suspected of acute cholangitis.
• In...
Conclusion
• MDCT is a valuable method in imaging of the purulent processes in the abdominal cavity. It allows the diagnosis of these kinds of inflammatory diseases and the way to differentiate them from other abdominal pathologies.
