Methods or background
In late 2018, Image Wisely unveiled a completely new and redesigned website. In the same time period, the Image Wisely Executive Committee discussed and brainstormed ideas for improving the effectiveness of its outreach and elevating Image Wisely’s public profile. The primary action item from those discussions was for Image Wisely to use Facebook Live as a tool to engage the radiology community. Facebook Live is a feature that allows the live stream of video to an audience who can provide reactions, comments and shares in real-time or watch the recorded video at a later time. Between January 2019 and August 2020, Image Wisely conducted 10 Facebook Live events. For each event, we tracked the reach (# of people who saw the post), views (# of people who saw at least 3 seconds of the video), engagements (reactions, comments, shares), and new followers gained within seven days of the event. These reported social media statistics were downloaded on November 2, 2020. Facebook Live events were retrospectively categorized by number of presenters in the video (single or 2+), and the four aforementioned social media statistics were evaluated as a function in the context of number of presenters, with the hypothesis that viewers are more attracted to presentations that have a discussion format (2+ presenters) compared to those that have a lecture format (single presenter). The highest and second highest values for each of the four social media statistics were identified, and overall averages for each statistic were calculated for both lecture and discussion formats. The number of new followers gained within seven days was not available for the first four events, one of which was in discussion format with the other three being lecture format. Of the first ten events conducted by Image Wisely, which is the composition of this initial study, the fourth, ninth, and tenth were in discussion format with all others being in lecture format. The process of migrating toward discussion format in the last two Facebook Live events was organic, i.e. not planned for any purpose other than invited presenters desiring a co-presenter to bring more and different expertise to the presentation.
