Table 1 shows descriptive statistics for the ten Facebook Live events in the study, including the reported social media statistics and asterisks identifying the highest and second highest values for each. The event with the highest reach and number of views was part 2 of a pair of events reviewing NCRP Report Number 184 on medical radiation exposure (reach = 14,604; views = 4,500), which also had the highest number of new followers gained (52), and was conducted in discussion format. Interestingly, part 1 of the pair of NCRP Report No. 184 Facebook Live events was conducted in lecture format and was not highest or second-highest in any of the four reported social media statistics. A discussion regarding the use of patient gonadal shielding (reach = 11,232; views = 3,500) had the highest number of engagements (1,128). The second highest number of followers was gained from a dialogue on discontinuing routine patient shielding during COVID-19 (new followers = 36). We observe a trend that the most successful events were all conducted in discussion format, i.e. with 2+ people participating on camera. Specifically, for all four of the reported social media statistics or measures, of the eight values representing the highest and second highest for each statistic, seven of them were from Facebook Liveevents conducted in discussion format. A lecture format event on CT imaging of pregnant patients garnered the second highest number of engagements of all events in the study.
Table 2 shows average values for each of the four reported social media statistics. The average reach was 5,101 for Facebook Live events in lecture format (n=7) and 9,602 for events in discussion format (n=3). Average engagements were 414 for events in lecture format (n=7) and 893 for events in discussion format (n=3). Average views were 1,497 for events in lecture format (n=7) and 3,200 for events in discussion format (n=3). As previously mentioned, the number of new followers within seven days of the Facebook Live event was not available for the first four events, three of which were lecture format and one of which was discussion format. The average number of new followers within seven days was 17.3 for events in lecture format (n=4) and 44.0 for events in discussion format.
There are a couple of notable limitations of this study. First and foremost, this is a new initiative with a small sample size. Secondly, social media statistics are reported cumulatively, which means that each Facebook Live event had a different amount of time to accumulate reach, engagement, and views. However, we are comfortable that these statistics will approach their maxima somewhat asymptotically, and 60+ days is an adequate time to accumulate representative data, i.e. we believe the data represent a real trend in Image Wisely’s audience preferring video content in discussion format compared to lecture format. This new initiative needs further exploration and advancement to confirm the early-observed trend.
